Why the American High School System
Studying the American way can be very rewarding. A unique advantage of the American education system lies in the quality and the applicability of the curriculum to real life situations. The academic programs are up to date with the changing needs of education.
As opposed to the educational philosophy of expecting students to learn towards passing examinations, the American educational system enables students to get the best out of themselves on daily basis. It’s as if each day is an exams day as every work done by students forms part of their grade cumulatively. In addition, emphasis is placed on ex c e l l i n g and not passing. Students are given the opportunity to stretch their minds like limbs to the limit in order to achieve excellence. The practice of awarding 100% freely to the deserving motivates students to give their best always. It raises their self-esteem and inspires them to keep setting higher and higher learning goals. Thus the system discourages mediocrity and rewards hard work. In our school for example the pass mark is 70% as shown in the attached grading scale yet many students find it easier to pass their examinations in this system than in others where the pass mark is 50%. Unlike systems that administer one-time external examinations to assess and validate the evidence of student learning achievement, the American High School system employs a variety of assessment methods on a continuous basis to ensure that the practice of pursuing excellence becomes a daily activity in school. The courses are tailored to provide useful knowledge for effective personal and career decision making.
